The big secret of Bolivia is without doubt the Salar de Uyuni, the worlds largest
salt flat, a dried up salt lake with islands.
It's the largest in the world, a staggering 10,500 km2
(4,045 miles2) (that is one third of the surface of Belgium).
The salt flat consists of 11 layers with thickness' that vary in between 2 and 10m. (6 and 33 ft.),
the crust that is found on the surface has a thickness of 10 meters (33 ft).
Salar de Uyuni (click on the photo collage above to see more pictures) will provoke your senses mercilessly with
its beauty and I can highly recommend visiting this amazing treasure of nature when you travel in Bolivia.
A tour takes you on the salar and into the desert all the way to the border of Chile.
On the trip you see, besides the salar, the green and the red lake, geysers,
Isla Pescada (Fish Island) and hot spring baths. You're accompanied of a gorgeous never ceasing tranquility.
A three-day tour to the Salar de Uyuni can be booked in the town of Uyuni (or you can set out on one of the amazing Salar de Uyuni tours we offer).
Food and accommodation is included. My group had 6 people and an excellent driver. The "salar"
is something special. Don't forget that you're walking on salt... the landscape is so surreal,
it's truly like being on another planet.
After the "salar" you go into the desert. Nature has created not only wonderful
rock formations but also two amazing lakes. The algae's in the water give the colour to the
beautiful green and red lake.
A Salar de Uyuni tour booked in the city of Uyuni takes you all the way to the border of
Chile and you can continue your journey and cross the border or return to Uyuni.
Take yourself away to this remote and exotic world that you can sample in the space of an
ordinary fortnight. Across the remote and windswept Bolivian altiplano, discover the colonial
towns of La Paz, Potosi and Sucre.
Cross the shimmering salt flats: a landscape of cactus-studded deserts; hot spring baths; geysers; pink flamingos;
red, green and turquoise lakes unfolds before you.
Descend to the lunar landscapes of the Atacama Desert, then on to the Chilean coast: the trendy beach
resort of La Serena and the cosmopolitan capital city of Santiago.
