Default Working volunteer in Peru

Hi Mark, I am planning to go and work as a volunteer in Peru from September this year for several months up to a year. To be able to cover my living costs I would like to find another job, where I get paid. Do I have to ask for a work permit? Is it easy to go into coffee shops or similar - ask and actually get a short term job? I do speak Spanish, English and come from Central Europe.
What could be a monthly salary for 2-3days/week, I have no idea.
Any usefull tips you can give me are more than welcomed!
Gracias! Merinka

Hola Merinka,

To pay for your living expenses you may consider teaching English in one of the many schools in Peru. A work permit is very difficult to get by. I taught English in one of the most prestigious schools in La Plata, Argentina without a work permit. I've also met many backpackers who were teaching English without a work permit. Your best bet is to just go and check out the schools. Do not expect a high pay-out. This is just going to cover the basic necessities.

I've not met foreigners working in a coffee shop or pub when I traveled in Peru but you should check them out when you're there. Never say never.

Have a look at this thread in the forums about volunteer work in Peru and other countries. There's some great information on general cost and living expenses when you volunteer. You can read more here

Feel free to ask more. I'll do my best to help you out.

Best wishes,

Mark
